Understanding Tinnitus

Millions of people experience ‘ringing’ or noises in their ears called Tinnitus.

There are two types of Tinnitus: Subjective and Objective.

Subjective Tinnitus is the most common type and is typically caused by noise-induced hearing loss.  Other causes may include ear infections, middle ear fluid, ear wax blockage, stress, neurological damage and exposure to loud sounds.

Objective Tinnitus is Tinnitus that can be heard by others.  Its causes can include abnormally large blood vessels inside the ear, middle ear tumors, etc.

For subjective Tinnitus, there are therapies, including sound conditioning, that might help.   And some have found relief through herbal supplements.

If a person has subjective Tinnitus and hearing loss, hearing instruments have often been found to mask the ringing or other noises in the ears.  Most hearing instruments now include Tinnitus therapy options, which can be adjusted to user preferences.  This system can also be used by people with normal hearing.  Please check with your doctor if you think you might have Tinnitus.
